Your realistic Track & Field list (reach / target / safe)
Cross your FAT marks with each division's benchmark and build 15-25 schools. Prioritise D2, NAIA and JUCO as the realistic European path.
Build a list of 15-25 schools by crossing your FAT marks with each division's benchmark. Split by tier:
| Tier | How your mark fits |
|---|---|
| Reach | Near D1 "top" (e.g. men's 1500m ~3:45-3:50) |
| Target | Mid-band D1 or high end of D2/NAIA |
| Safe | At or below the D2/D3/NAIA "low" end |
D1 men reference (indicative): 100m 10.41→10.80, 800m 1:47.1→1:58.5, 5K XC 13:58→15:52. D2 men already drops to 1500m 3:46.7→4:05.5, 800m 1:48.9→1:58.8. D2 women: 800m 2:09→2:34, 5K XC 17:00→21:11. D3/NAIA usually sit at or below the D2 "low".
European priority — be realistic:
- D2 and NAIA: more flexible equivalency splits; less saturated than the D1 top.
- JUCO (NJCAA): a "second-chance" route into the NCAA; useful if your marks or transcript aren't there yet, or to gain an adaptation year.
- Remember XC and Track are separate rosters: run both and you multiply entry doors.
Tip: weight your progression, not just the PR. A D2/NAIA coach invests in a rising curve. And before locking the list, confirm with each coach whether the school opted into the House settlement and how it actually funds spots.
