Your realistic list in Volleyball (reach / target / safe)
How to cross your level and measurables with each division's benchmark to build a 15-25 school list, prioritising D2/NAIA/JUCO.
Build a 15-25 school list by crossing your measurables (height, approach touch, vertical, position) and competitive level against each division's benchmark. Split it into three bands:
| Band | What it is | For a European |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | D1 (opted-in, roster 18) | hard without national-team / top touch |
| Target | D2 (8 schol. women / 4.5 men) and NAIA (8) | the realistic core |
| Safe | JUCO/NJCAA | bridge for academics/eligibility and US film |
Practical rule: if your approach touch and height sit below the estimated D1 range for your position, don't load the list with D1. The reality for most Europeans is D2, NAIA and JUCO, where the level is high but access and partial aid are attainable. JUCO is also the common route to fix academics/eligibility and build US film before transferring.
Size the universe: there are hundreds of women's programs (D2 ~288, NAIA ~217, NJCAA ~313 teams; average rosters ~13-18), but men's is tiny (~30 D1/D2 programs combined) with higher physical bars. Put more target/safe than reach, and verify opt-in status and scholarships school by school: the numbers shift every season.
