Your realistic Basketball list (reach / target / safe)
How to cross your level with each division's benchmark to build a 15-25 school list.
A good list comes from crossing your real level (height/position, stats, opponent level, ranking or NCSA profile) with each division's benchmark. Be honest: the costly mistake is aiming only at high-major D1 and running out of options.
Spread 15-25 schools across three buckets:
| Bucket | % of list | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | ~20% | Above your level; maybe D1 if you have a ranking/national team |
| Target | ~50% | You fit the benchmark (often D2/NAIA) |
| Safe | ~30% | Below your level; high probability (NAIA/JUCO) |
For a European, prioritize D2, NAIA and JUCO as realistic paths: they're equivalency (combinable partial scholarships) and coaches recruit internationals actively — 600+ Europeans already on D1 rosters, and many more below. JUCO is a strong bridge if you're under-recruited or need to fix academics before the jump.
Criteria to filter each school: division, conference, need at your position (check the current roster and who's graduating), academic level/admission, real cost after aid, and whether the school is opted into House (affects how they fund the roster). Reach out first — you can do this anytime — and personalize each email with why you fit that program.
