The Swimming CV a coach actually values
Coaches recruit verified TIMES, not impressions. Ranking systems, marks by division, and what to put on your CV.
Coaches don't recruit impressions; they recruit verified times, above all in Short Course Yards (SCY), the college format. If you swim LCM/SCM (the European norm), the coach converts your marks to projected SCY and to World Aquatics (FINA) points for a single scale (~750+ = serious D1 conversation; 850+ = high-major).
Systems they use: World Aquatics (FINA) Points, SwimCloud (recruiting database), USA Swimming/SWIMS (Futures, Sectionals), SwimRankings.net (the European hub) and NCAA championship standards (from 2026, a single qualifying time per event).
Benchmarks — MEN, 50 free (SCY):
| Level | 50 free |
|---|---|
| D1 power-conference | ≤ ~19.9 |
| Strong D1 / elite D2-D3 | ~20.5-20.9 |
| Mid D1 / D2-D3 | ~21.1-21.4 |
| Low D2-D3 / NAIA | ~21.7-23.9 |
100 free (M): top D1 ≤~43.8; D2-D3/NAIA ~47.8-50.9. WOMEN are slower at every level (elite D1 50 free ~21.7). NCSA tiers are directional, not official.
What to put on the CV: best times per event with course (LCM/SCM/SCY), date and sanctioned meet; a SwimCloud/SwimRankings link; FINA points; national finals/medals, age-group records, junior/senior national-team selection; and your improvement curve and age (room to drop time).
