The American Football CV a coach values
The rating systems, the concrete metrics coaches recruit on, and approximate benchmarks by division.
Coaches recruit on game film and verified measurables, not opinions. Know the rating systems that shape the market: 247Sports (and the Composite), Rivals, On3 and legacy ESPN (2–5 stars). Camp/combine circuits (Nike Elite 11, The Opening, Rivals Camp Series; for internationals PPI Recruits and NFL Academy testing) feed those ratings.
Metrics they measure: height/weight (position thresholds), 40-yard dash (speed), bench press (reps at 185/225 lb), vertical jump, broad jump, pro-agility (5-10-5) and L-drill (3-cone), wingspan (linemen). But position is judged on film: WR/DB closing speed and hands, OL/DL get-off and anchor, QB arm and accuracy.
Approximate benchmarks (vary by service and position; not an official NCAA standard — verify with your source):
| Level | 40-yard (skill) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| FBS Power | ~4.4–4.5 s | WR 36"+ vert; OL ~6'4", 300–315 lb |
| FCS / D2 | ~4.4–4.7 s | OL ~6'2"–6'6", 250–290 lb |
| NAIA / JUCO | ≈ FCS or slightly below | more projection |
On your CV: name, position, grad year, height/weight, GPA and test scores, verified measurables (40, bench, vertical), link to Hudl + full game film, and any European combine number (NFL Academy, PPI) a coach can't see live.
