When a coach can contact you (Track & Field)

In D1, first digital contact opens June 15 after sophomore year; in-person contact and visits, Aug 1 of junior year. You may reach out earlier.

Guidance only — not legal advice nor an eligibility guarantee. Binding decisions rest with the NCAA Eligibility Center and US authorities.

The exact D1 rule for Track/Cross: a coach may initiate digital contact (calls, texts, email, DMs, recruiting materials) from June 15 after your sophomore year (after 10th grade). Off-campus in-person contact (at a meet or your home) and official/unofficial visits do not open until August 1 of your junior year. This is the same as golf on the first-contact date.

Milestone (D1)When
First digital contactJun 15 after sophomore year
In-person contact + visitsAug 1 of junior year
Signing (aid agreement)Early ~Nov 12, 2025; regular ~Apr 2026

2025-26 windows (re-verify each season in the official PDF): evaluation period Aug 1-21, 2025; contact Aug 22-Dec 14, 2025 and Dec 27, 2025-Jul 31, 2026; dead periods: Nov 10-13, Nov 22, Dec 15-26, 2025, Mar 13-14 and Jun 10-13, 2026 (during dead periods, calls/texts yes, in-person no).

D2 is more open: coaches may call/text anytime; unofficial visits anytime; official visits from June 15 before junior year.

Two key notes: the NLI was eliminated (Oct 2024) — "signing" now = an athletics aid agreement, and dates shift yearly. And most important for you: you may ALWAYS reach out to the coach first; these rules limit the coach, not you.
