When a coach can contact you (Swimming)
The exact D1 contact rule in swimming: June 15 after sophomore year. Key visit and signing windows, and that you can always reach out first.
Guidance only — not legal advice nor an eligibility guarantee. Binding decisions rest with the NCAA Eligibility Center and US authorities.
Exact D1 rule (swimming): coaches may start recruiting communication on June 15 AFTER sophomore year (end of 10th grade). Same trigger as golf. On that day these open at once: calls, texts, emails, DMs/social media, recruiting materials and verbal offers.
Important (correction): June 15 does NOT open in-person off-campus contact. Only electronic/phone/written communication and verbal offers unlock. Off-campus contact and visits come later.
Swimming uses the June 15-after-sophomore model, NOT the later (Aug 1 / Sep 1 of junior year) model used by football/basketball.
Key windows:
| Milestone | When |
|---|---|
| First D1 personal contact | June 15 after sophomore |
| Official (paid) visits | from Aug 1 before junior |
| Unofficial visits | anytime (self-funded) |
| Dead periods 2025-26 | e.g. Aug 18-24, Nov 10-13, Dec 18-Jan 7, Feb 8-21 |
| NLI signing | signing window (typically mid-November) |
Dead and signing dates change every year and track the championship calendar; re-verify the current official version with your source.
You can always reach out first: no rule stops YOU from emailing coaches (intro/questionnaire) before June 15. For a European that's the smart move: introduce yourself early, send times and a results link, and let them reply once their window opens. Internationals: clear the Eligibility Center (academic + amateurism) before signing/enrolling.
