When a coach can contact you (Softball)

In D1 softball there's NO contact before September 1 of junior year (11th). Beware: it's not the golf rule. You can always reach out first.

The key D1 softball rule: no coach communication is allowed before September 1 of junior year (11th grade). On that day everything opens at once — calls, texts, emails, recruiting materials, and arranging official and unofficial visits. The NFCA championed this date, passed in April 2018 to curb early recruiting.

Do not confuse it with golf: golf opens D1 contact on June 15 after 10th (sophomore). Softball is much later. Treating softball like golf would have a European family expecting calls a full year-plus too early. (In softball, June 15 after sophomore applies only to D2, which is far less restrictive.)

Two caveats: the NLI was eliminated (NCAA, Oct-2024); commitments are now formalised via a financial-aid agreement, not the old letter of intent. And the contact/eval/quiet/dead periods are annual — check the official NCAA calendar each season.

Critical: YOU can always reach out first. These rules restrict the coach, not you; send your email + video whenever you like, especially in NAIA, which has no calendar.
