When a coach can contact you (American Football)
American football D1's three contact gates (much later than golf) and why you must reach out first.
Guidance only — not legal advice nor an eligibility guarantee. Binding decisions rest with the NCAA Eligibility Center and US authorities.
American football has a much later contact calendar than golf and most sports, with staggered gates (D1). Don't confuse them with golf's.
| Gate | When | What's allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal offer | Jun 15 after sophomore year | Coach may extend a verbal/unofficial offer |
| Materials + email/text/DM | Sep 1 of junior year | Electronic correspondence and recruiting materials |
| Off-campus contact | Jul 1 before senior year | Only in contact periods; max 6 contacts |
| Phone calls | Sep 1 of senior year | 1/week; unlimited in contact periods |
Note: there's also one permitted call between Apr 15 and May 31 of junior year; otherwise, no calls until Sep 1 of senior year. Electronic communication does not open Jun 15 after sophomore year (that's just the verbal offer): materials and emails/DM start Sep 1 of junior year.
Visits: up to 5 official (paid, one per school) from the start of senior-year classes, with a junior window Apr 1 – Sunday before the last Wednesday of June; unofficial visits are unlimited anytime. Signing: early period Dec 3–5, 2025 and regular day Feb 4, 2026; the NLI was eliminated (Oct 2024) and you now sign via a Financial Aid Agreement.
Key for a European: since calls don't come until senior year, you can (and should) reach out first by email with your film. Verify FBS vs FCS dates in the official cycle PDF — they change every year.
