When a coach can contact you (Basketball)
The exact D1 first-contact rule (different for men and women) and the key windows.

Basketball has a quirk many people get wrong: the D1 first-contact date differs between men and women.
- Men's D1: coaches may initiate personal contact (calls, texts, emails, DMs, recruiting materials, verbal offers) starting June 15 after the sophomore year (~10th grade).
- Women's D1: contact opens earlier, on June 1 after the sophomore year (two weeks before the men). It's a distinct rule, easy to mix up.
Important: before those dates, you can always write to the coach first. What the coach can't do is initiate or respond to you personally.
Key calendar windows (2025-26 cycle, changes annually):

Basketball also has formal alternating contact / evaluation / dead / quiet periods (July is the key live-evaluation window). Note: the NLI was abolished (2024); commitments now finalize via a written athletic-aid offer, not the old National Letter of Intent. Verbal promises are not binding. Always verify dates against the official NCAA calendar for the current cycle.
