Scholarships and roster in Volleyball: D1 / D2 / NAIA / JUCO
How scholarships work by division, the House settlement roster limits, and why D2/NAIA/JUCO are the realistic paths for a European.
Guidance only — not legal advice nor an eligibility guarantee. Binding decisions rest with the NCAA Eligibility Center and US authorities.
Volleyball changed in 2025. The House v. NCAA settlement (effective July 1, 2025) eliminates sport-specific scholarship caps at D1 schools that opt in and replaces them with roster limits. For those schools the indoor volleyball roster is 18 athletes (same for women's and men's), and up to 18 may receive full or partial aid.
Before House the caps differed sharply: D1 women's = 12 full scholarships (headcount) and D1 men's = 4.5 (equivalency). Men's is the big winner (4.5 to up to 18 fundable). Athletes already on a roster at the cutoff (Designated Student-Athletes) are grandfathered and do NOT count against the 18 cap.
| Division | Aid type | Number |
|---|---|---|
| D1 (opted-in) | roster cap | 18 (full or partial) |
| D2 women's | equivalency | 8 |
| D2 men's | equivalency | 4.5 |
| NAIA | equivalency | 8 |
| JUCO (NJCAA DI women's) | up to ~14 | bridge |
Note: the 18 cap applies only to D1 schools that opted in (deadline June 30, 2025); the rest keep the old caps. Verify opt-in school by school. For a European, the realistic paths are usually D2, NAIA or JUCO (a bridge to fix academics/eligibility and gain US film).
