Scholarships and roster in Swimming: D1 / D2 / NAIA / JUCO

How swimming & diving scholarships split by division, the new D1 roster limit of 30, and what's realistic for a European.

Guidance only — not legal advice nor an eligibility guarantee. Binding decisions rest with the NCAA Eligibility Center and US authorities.

Swimming is an equivalency sport in EVERY division (not headcount): one full scholarship is split among several swimmers. Diving counts inside the same swimming & diving pool.

Key 2025-26 change (House v. NCAA settlement, from Jul 1, 2025): D1 schools that OPT IN replace the old caps with a roster limit of 30 athletes per team (men and women separately). In theory they may fund up to 30; in practice almost none do, and many conferences set sub-caps (e.g. the SEC set ~22 for men's swimming). Schools that do NOT opt in revert toward the old caps.

DivisionScholarships (equivalencies)
D1 (opted in)up to ~30, discretionary (was M 9.9 / W 14)
D2~8.1 per team (M & W)
NAIA~8 per team
JUCO (NJCAA D1/D2)up to ~15; NJCAA D3 no athletic aid

Men vs women: women's swimming was historically better funded (14 vs 9.9) under Title IX; even with the flat 30 cap, Title IX still governs distribution and women's programs often stay better resourced.

Realistic for a European: the "up to 30" ceiling is theoretical, not typical. D2, NAIA and JUCO are sensible paths, often stacking athletic aid with academic/merit money. Verify per program how many funded spots actually exist.
