Amateurism & money in golf (the European trap)

The #1 mistake of European golfers: taking cash prizes. Rules + the recent 2026 change (verify).

Guidance only — not legal advice nor an eligibility guarantee. Binding decisions rest with the NCAA Eligibility Center and US authorities.

The #1 European mistake is taking cash prizes. Historically pre-college prize money couldn't exceed actual expenses; accepting a cash prize made you a pro. ⚠️ 2026 change (very recent, verify): the D1 Cabinet (Apr 15, 2026) and settlement (May 4, 2026) remove pre-enrollment prize-money caps — pending final approval and D2/D3 applicability, so be cautious and ask the Eligibility Center. Still banned: pro/agent contracts, salary for playing, prize money once enrolled (NIL is allowed in-school). D1/D2 first enrollment requires final amateurism certification before competing.
